Heritage Month 2010

Since 1994, 24 September has been celebrated as Heritage Day in South Africa. Over the past few years the entire month of September has come to be marked as Heritage Month, and a number of activities are usually presented by government, non-governmental organisations, religious groups, schools and others. We will be arranging a number of programmes at the Museum over the next few weeks, with the Friday 24 September being the main feature.

Commemorating Emancipation Day

The dawn of 1 December 1834 was greeted with bonfires and festive rejoicing by the enslaved people of the Cape, as the day marked their legal emancipation from bondage. It brought to a close one of the most shameful and inhumane periods of our history, which had it its core the capture, sale and ownership of humans by other humans. Click here to read more

Fields of Play: FOOTBALL MEMORIES AND FORCED REMOVALS IN CAPE TOWN

A new exhibition Fields of Play: football memories and forced removals in Cape Town will open at the District Six Homecoming Centre, 15A Buitenkant Street, Cape Town on Tuesday 21 October 2008

The Fields of Play exhibition explores the dynamic intersection of memory, football and forced removals in the history of Cape Town. More than merely a scene of pastime and leisure, football offers us some insights into the complex social history that defined Cape Town as a modern South African city.

The exhibition explores the emergence of football on the Green Point Common from the 1800s until the period of forced removals in the 1950s, and its re-organisation on the edges of an apartheid city. The exhibition is a tentative step towards deepening our understanding of forced removals and its consequences on those who administered, played and watched football in Cape Town. As Green Point Common once again becomes the focal point of football in the city with the approach of the 2010 Soccer World Cup - we wish to recall the routes football has travelled from the difficult days of its emergence on the Common, to its re-emergence on the edges of the city.

The exhibition offers an account of football as it was played on Green Point Common (Greenpoint), Maitland (Royal Road), Langa (Langa Stadium), Kenilworth (Rosmead Sports Ground), Athlone (Athlone Stadium), Observatory (Hartleyvale), Salt River (Shelley Street), Wynberg (William Herbert Sports Ground), Rylands (Rygate) and Stellenbosch.

In presenting Fields of Play, the Museum has built on its methodology of combining oral histories and narratives drawn from vast private and public collections to enliven our understanding of the meaning of forced removals.

Fields of Play has temporarily been closed because of building renovations. We anticipate a re-opening towards the end of November but a date will be announced closer to the time. The new entrance fee of R20 will apply, with a combined ticket to both exhibitions being R35.

YOU ARE INVITED TO THE LAUNCH PARTY OF KHOI KHONNEXION`s FIRST CD-RELEASE.

Khoi Khonnexion (Jethro Louw - poetry, Glen Arendse and Garth Erasmus - indigenous instruments) has been performing in Cape Town for ten years, during which time they have risen to the forefront of the First Nation arts movement in South Africa.  Their live performances feature trance-inducing improvisations on homemade instruments inspired by indigenous models, and dramatic recitations of original poetry by "The Ghetto Poet," Jethro Louw.  In their workshops, they have worked with at-risk youth and adults from all backgrounds to find a source of healing in the musical heritage of Southern Africa.  Now, with their first full-length album release, Kalahari Waits, they explore new creative territory while raising funds for the Basarwa San in the Kalahari Desert, who were trampled and pushed aside when diamonds were found in their government-sanctioned  homeland in Botswana.  The self-released album, a collaboration with American producer Nate May, follows the sun across the sky with indigenous sounds, loops, field recordings, and poetry that wrestles with Khoisan identity in the modern world.

The release party, on Saturday, 6 June at 18h00 in the District Six Museum in Cape Town, will feature a performance by the group and a guest artist.  CDs will be on sale [R100], as will handmade T-Shirts by the prominent visual artist and Khoi Khonnexion member Garth Erasmus.
