Stepping Stones

ss01The Stepping Stones Children’s Centre shares premises with the District Six Museum and Ons Plek, a shelter for girls. These three projects are housed in a building that is owned by the Central Methodist Mission in Cape Town.

Stepping Stones is an early childhood development centre which strives to bring the highest standard of education and care to all children, particularly those coming from low-income families.

Although Stepping Stones has formed part of the inner-city landscape since 1976, the past decade in particular has seen the school develop on a number of different levels. It has been an exciting period, in many ways reflecting the growing awareness of the importance of early childhood education.

Focus: More than daycare

ss02Besides providing an invaluable facility for working parents, Stepping Stones strives to extend beyond this. Stepping Stones has an holistic approach to learning: one which places the development of the whole child at the centre of the process. The Centre favours non-competitive, cooperative learning methodologies which focus on the child as an individual as well as part of a learning, growing community. The Centre celebrates difference.

Stepping Stones strives to make each child feel that his or her way of being a South African is a wonderful way of being. "We help them to develop positive self-images – so essential to their future academic performance and general functioning as well-rounded, responsible members of society." - Thelma Chisholm, Principal.

Staff of the Centre report to the Stepping Stones Board of Management (BOM), which consists of representatives elected from the parent body, staff, and members of the Central Methodist Mission. The current BOM chairperson is Stan Abrahams.
