District SixYouth Club

The Youth Club is one of the first outcomes of the twinship between the Malmö City Museum and the District Six Museum that was fostered by the Swedish African Museum Programme (SAMP).

The initial project involved teaching children from a school in District Six to conduct oral history interviews. These children then went on to interview ex-Principals and ex-students of their school, each coming up with his or her own interview questions.

The information generated during this exercise will form part of an exhibition at the school in Chapel Street, District Six, and will later be deposited in the museum’s archive. Our main focus is the documentation of the redevelopment of the District and the return of ex-residents as happens.

We are currently redesigning the youth club concept with Linda Fortune, Primary Schools in the District Six area and the Zonnebloem Arts Centre.
